Abergavenny mens hockey (1st XI) report 15th Oct 2005

  Abergavenny 2
  Whitchurch 5
From the very start Abergavenny were chasing shadows as Whitchurch passed the ball smoothly between themselves. The Whitchurch central midfielders could have easily played at a much higher standard and showed their class as they ran the show.
To their credit, Abergavenny never gave up in chasing for the win, and this determination allowed Whitchurch a couple of late goals as they caught Abergavenny on the break. Abergavenny must therefore work hard in the coming weeks to improve fitness levels to be able to play at the high tempo right to the end of the game.
In central midfield Andy Lloyd showed his return to form as he covered every grain of sand on the pitch, but was too often let down by his team mates who were struggling a few seconds behind. Down the right wing the combination of Andy Banks and Tom Griffiths provided problems for Whitchurch and forced a number of short corners, from which Nigel Sanchez scored Abergavenny’s first with a flick into the bottom of the goal.
It was Sanchez who scored in the second half, again with another flick, but that was as good as it got for Abergavenny. Peter Hewinson, as sweeper, earned man-of-the-match, but could do nothing against the Whitchurch short corner routine which was as well organised as all of their play. The final scoreline of 5-2 was perhaps a little flattering to Whitchurch, but Abergavenny must take valuable experience from the game.
This Saturday Abergavenny host Neath at Abergavenny Leisure Centre and welcome all friends and well wishers to lend their support at 2pm.
