Abergavenny mens hockey (2nd XI) report 8th Oct 2005

  Abergavenny A 3
  Llanishen / Caerphilly B 2

Abergavenny 2nd XI took 13 players away to a wet Bedwas on Saturday. Abergavenny have developed a settled side in their last two matches and are beginning to put whole team performances together in their league matches.
Abergavenny began briskly with quick passing moves between Tom Harris in and Vaisey Bramley, which almost opened up the opposition. The pressure did not let up, however Llanishen/Caerphilly used their forward line to good effect as the game developed. All of this was broken when a quick breakaway move started in defence by Paul Harrington and linking through Vaisey Bramley put Geraint Tuxworth-Jones in on the goalkeeper who he beat to score.
Abergavenny held the lead to half time, partly through heroic defending from full backs, Tim Rees, Joe Phillips and Isaac Pritchard, with goalkeeper Martin Brown making some excellent saves. Early in the second half Llansihen/Caerphilly scored from a very well hit short corner which gave the Abergavenny defence little chance. However Abergavenny seemed to be inspired themselves by this and pressed forward in attempts to score, these were rewarded when Vaisey Bramley scored followed by Tom Harris taking the ball around the goalkeeper and scoring Abergavenny's third goal. Now with a 3-1 lead Abergavenny did not sit back and defend they played the rest of the game with high intensity.
Even though Llanishen/Caerphilly attacked strongly, Abergavenny went very close to extending their lead from incisive breakaway attacks which saw Duncan Melville, Vaisey Bramley and Geraint Tuxworth-Jones all have chances to score. As the game came to an end with 8 minutes left Llansihen/Caerphilly scored their second goal. Still undeterred Abergavenny refused to give in and dug deep to hold out to the end of the game and register their first win in South Wales Division 3. Thanks to Keith Stuart for umpiring the match for Abergavenny.
