Abergavenny mens hockey (1st XI) report 8th Oct 2005

  Abergavenny 2
  Pembrokeshire 2

Pembrokeshire returned on the long journey home still unbeaten in the league but felt themselves fortunate to come away with a point. The pouring rain could not dampen Abergavenny’s spirits as they raced to a 2-0 lead.
The first came from a through ball from Andy Lloyd, and man-of-the-match Louis Kirkham raced on to push the ball under the advancing Pembrokeshire keeper. The second was a masterclass in movement. Nigel Sanchez picked up possession and drew three defenders to the right. He was then able to slip the ball left to the unmarked Anthony Clements who had no problem finishing this week.
Abergavenny then showed a lapse in concentration to allow a Pembroke midfielder to dribble a mazy path past four defenders before shooting through Peter Bartlett’s feet in goal. Pembrokeshire piled on more pressure in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty flick after their attacker was pushed to the floor.
A spectators' paradise then ensued as both teams pressed for the winner in some thrilling end to end hockey. The home team could easily have had a penalty flick of their own given after a Pembroke defender seemed to deliberately use his foot to stop the ball, but unfortunately a short corner was deemed sufficient punishment and Abergavenny were unable to capitalise.
Captain Geraint Davies praised his team after the game and gave credit to the battling spirit of all his players, but felt disappointed to give away a lead and hopes in future Abergavenny can finish teams off from such strong positions.
This Saturday, Abergavenny travel to Whitchurch hoping to strengthen their position in the table.
